Welcome to the site of the Iqaluit Humane Society 2007
“IHS2007”
This is a non profit organization founded in August 2007 to help raise community awareness surrounding the humane treatment of animals and to assist the community with it's animal over population issue. This is a very challenging task given the location and the animal care resources available in the Nunavut. There is one Veterinarian currently stationed in Nunavut, however she does not have a facility available to carry out medical procedures. She is currently doing home visits and provides the care that she can with the available resources. There is also a team of Vet’s that are flown up to our isolated city by another non- profit Organization in town twice a year for one week intervals. Though we are very grateful for their services, it is not nearly enough to suit the cities needs. In many circumstances, such as when an animal is injured there is no one available to contact and give care to these animals. They are then placed in the care of the IHS and we do what we can to help these animals, again with what resources we have readily available.
IHS2007 has a great working relationship with the Ottawa Humane Society, we work very closely with their team and they offer us an adoption program. Canadian North has also been a tremendous help by allowing us to send these dogs to Ottawa. In addition the Canadian animal assistance team (CAAT) has been going into communities that do not have a Vet stationed. The services they provide include; carrying out free spay and neuter clinics, as well as administering vaccines to the animals. Two volunteers of the CAAT recently came to Iqaluit to assist us in carrying out a humane education project and completed dog handling training with the volunteers of the Iqaluit Humane Society. We had a great weekend and learnt lots of useful information that will greatly benefit our society.

This volunteer organization is based in Iqlauit the capital city of Nunavut, Canada's Newest Territory. IHS2007 as of April 24th, 2008 we now operate out of a space that has been gratefully provided to the organization free of cost by the municipality. This space is in great need of renovations to make it functional as a shelter for the organization. The organization will be actively canvassing the community members to be involved and urging those to make donations to make this dream a reality. A few of local business have already showed there support or have made a commitment of support through varies ways with our organization and we are very thankful to them.

The animals that are in our care are nurtured, feed and exercised by many munificent volunteers daily. If you are interested in being a volunteer, a member of our society or would like to make a donation please email Iqaluithumanesociety2007@hotmail.com
